I was speaking with a girlfriend last week and the topic of bra washing came up...of course, by now I feel I'm an expert in the subject. She mentioned that someone said to her that they will re wear their expensive bras atleast 3 times before washing because they were scared of damaging them.

At this point I think my soul may have exited my body, the embarrassment of having this strange woman accost me, was more than I could bear! I could go into greater details but honestly the flashbacks are too darn cringe-worthy!

"Two years ago I was on the volleyball team at my high school. I was a freshman that year and my school was kind of big on always picking on the underclassmen. So, I was changing after a game once, and I was next to some juniors and seniors on the team as well. I was taking my sports bra off and right when I got it off, two of them grab me and push me outside in a thong and no bra. I was banging on the door and then I saw the whole varsity football team walking by and whistling and staring at my exposed breasts. I ended up running around to the back of the building and hid until one of my friend's walked out with my stuff. It was the most embarassing moment ever."

Increasing your Bra Shelf Life

Want your bra to last a long time? Of course your washing regimen is important, but there is way more to it...your habits affect your bra life as well. Here are a few tips to help you increase the shelf life of your bra.

1. Have a bra for every day of the week
Over wearing your bra can cause it to wear out, decreasing it's shelf life. Making sure you have a different bra that you can wear everyday. It can save you money in the long run. Never wear one bra two days in a row, let them rest a little so you won't decrease the elasticity.

2. Use a sensitive soap
If you mush use the washing machine, use the right soap. We like Woolite too, but Woolite is for wool. Try some other washing powders if Woolite isn't working for your bras. Other options inlclude Ivory Snow, Dreft, or Forever New for non bleach washing that won't damage elastics. Also, use a bra ball or a mesh laundry bag to keep your bra safe while in the washing machine.

3. Never, ever ever put your bra in the dryer
That's right, NEVER!! Would you put plastic in the oven? Well, bras are make of elastic and other materials that are heat sensitive. Wash in cool water and lay flat to dry...it'll double your bra life.

We disagree! On The Tyra Banks Show recently, Whitney Casey, author of The Man Plan said that men do not like nude bras:

Bra Horror Monday: The Curse of The Front Clasp

Today's Bra Horror Monday focuses on the curse of the front clasp. Almost 50% of bra horror stories are caused by the dreaded front clasp bra which can come undone at the most unlikely of times. The other 50%? Bras that are too small. Taylor aka The Fashion Dungjen, shares a great embarrassing bra moment with us:

"I am a softball junkie. I played my first T-ball game when I was five years old. Not too bad, right? I played through my senior year in high school - mostly as a catcher. I couldn't ever get enough of the sport. So, when I came to college two and a half years ago, I wasn't able to play as often as I'd like so I'd jump at the opportunity to do anything softball related. What that means is I basically would play catch with anyone who seemed marginally competent and had access to a glove.

One day I was playing catch with a friend when something started to feel a little off, a little uncomfortable. I ignored the shifting sensation in my T-shirt until things started to feel ... a little out of place. I took a quick glance down to assess the issue and realized my front-hook bra had come undone, probably from the repetitive throwing and contortions I had to do in order to catch the ball.

I was mortified. (My catch partner was a boy, by the way.) I pretended to miss the next throw so I cold retreat to pick it up. Instead, on my retreat, I tossed my glove to the ground to adjust my bra while my back was turned to my partner. I ended the game of catch after that. Clearly it was due to my extreme exhaustion. In retrospect, the bra probably didn't fit right, and, with constant movement, decided it couldn't keep things in order."

This week we stumbled across a Flickr photo group called Candid Brastraps. Candid Brastraps is a Flickr group with over 1,132 members and over 600 images of women and some of their most embarrassing moments involving visible bra straps, visible bra lines, color transfer and dimensional transfer.

Bra Horror Monday: Why You Need a Nude Bra

Today's Bra Horror Monday consists of a woman who should have been using our product or should have been reading our blog. She decided to wear a dress without a bra because she couldn't find a bra to wear under that particular dress that didn't commit a fashion faux pas.

So...she decided to go commando, and let’s just say, that by the end of the night, everyone knew what was under that dress:

“I have what can be termed an ‘ample’ chest! I also have an amazing dress that I love to bits. However I have never been able to find a bra that fits under that dress. You can either see the bra straps or the bra front. So, to wear the dress I must wear it bra-less, which as you can imagine, is flirting with danger! So .. on one particular occasion, my husband’s parents were over from England. My husband’s father is a fit, elderly, man and loves to dance. This particular occasion we were dancing together .. myself in my gorgeous dress ….. and yes, I fell out. Both of them! In front of my father in law ….. and N O-ONE told me!!! So there I was .. boogying down on the dance floor, showing my father-in-law the assets that attracted his son! I was horrified! And if that’s not a bra horror story, I don’t know what is!! - LS”

The History of Bras

We all need them, we wear them every day, and some women wear them all the time. We are talking about bras; but where did they come from and when did it all start?

According to Vogue, bras began way back in Cretan times, thousands of years ago, but became a part of worldwide culture in the 1900’s. 4. Exercise Regularly

5. Be Your Own Doctor

Fashion Police Wednesday: A Double Wammy

Today when we were digging through tons of images online in search of our Fashion Police Wednesday victim, in the words of Ursula the witch off of Little Mermaid, we found this "poor unfortunate soul" who was caught on camera with not only a visible bra but visible panties too.

No doubt, when she left the house with her vertical lined shirt (always a fashion yes) and her white sheer mini skirt, she had no idea that this day would come back to haunt her. One simple circular look in the mirror would have sufficed and saved her from the embarrassment, which I'm sure she suffered through the day unknowingly. I know we can't have the dreaded 360 mirror from What Not To Wear, but we can turn around and look over our shoulders with all the windows open and lights on so we can get a look at ourselves in natural light, especially when wearing anything sheer or white.

Let's break down this fashion victim’s regrettable choices and find a solution to the problem:

The first issue is the wearing of a white bra under a sheer shirt; our suggestion is to wear a skin tone matching t shirt bra. Since we can't see the front of the blouse…we are hoping and praying there's no peak-a-boo going on, which makes the t shirt bra perfect for this top.

Bra Horror Monday: The Frozen Bra Experience

Sometimes we stumble across a bra story that is so horrible, so hilarious, so outrageous that we share it with our readers. Today's bra horror story is an anonymous tale from That's Embarrassing about sibling rivalry, nipple exposure and an icebox!

"This is about a nasty prank that was played on me. One day, I had a job interview that was scheduled for early in the morning. I was rushing to put on my clothes when I realized that something was missing. I asked my little sister, "Where the is my bra?" And she said, "Maybe you should check in the freezer." Damn her, she had known I was going to an interview -- so the night before, she collected all my bras, soaked them in water, and stuck them in the freezer! They were frozen solid. I mean, I could have beaten someone to death with one of those things (and believe me, I was tempted). I was in a HUGE hurry, though.

Searching for the bras had wasted way too much of my time, and I figured "What the heck. I don't really need a bra anyway." So I just rushed out the door, and drove to the interview.

The woman who interviewed me seemed nice, and I thought the interview was going pretty well, but there was a problem. I'd picked my clothes before I realized that I wouldn't have a bra, so I was wearing a tee-shirt that was sort of tight. And there was air-conditioning in the room...REALLY cold air-conditioning. So my nipples became sort of...well...perky. VERY perky. I tried to act as if nothing strange was happening, but the woman kept looking at my chest with a sort of "What the Hell??" look on her face. I guess she though that I was a slut, or that I was just really, really enjoying that interview. She didn't hire me. :-( She gave the job to some boy instead. (If the interviewer had been a guy, I'd probably have a job right now :-P) I guess the only bright side is that in a couple of years, my sister will start wearing bras, too. And then I'll be able to get even with her. :-P"

One of our favorite forums to visit is The Exchange, especially their Fitness and Health section. One thread asked Exchange members about Bra Horror Stories and we thought that we would share two of the stories we thought were funny on our blog:

How To Really Find Your Bra Size

Bra fitting is serious business, especially when women across the globe have had the same complaint for years. They get fitted in department dressing room, put the bra on, come home and a week later the bra doesn't fit anymore. Or, they think they know their size in one brand, and find out that not only is that not their size, but every bra fits differently.

Well, we know that every bra fits differently, which is why, unlike other brands, we know exactly how you can find your perfect fitting MySkins skin tone matching bra. We know ordering online for underwear can be intimidating which is why we have laid everything out for our customers step by step. And nothing is more important than your bra fitting you exactly right.

Here's our step by step process on finding your perfect fitting bra:

Step 1: Band Size Measurement: While wearing a non-padded bra, and keeping the measuring tape parallel with the ground, measure around your bra directly under your bust after expelling all the air from your lungs. Round all measurements to the nearest whole number.

*Tip: This number should be as small as possible, with the tape being pulled firm, but without binding the skin. If the measurement is an even number, add 4". If the measurement is an odd number, add 5".

Step 2: Cup Size Measurement: Standing straight, with your arm at your side, measure at the fullest part of your bust (not too tight, not too loose). Make sure the measuring tape stays parallel to the ground. Round all measurements to the nearest whole number.

Step 3: Bra Size Calculation: Subtract your band measurement from step 1, from your cup measurement in step 2.

Fashion Police Wednesday: Gwyneth Paltrow’s French No No

We pulled this Fashion Police image from the archives. Gwyneth Paltrow pulled this off last year around November. At first we had to take a second look because we couldn't believe we caught an A list celebrity with VPL (visible panty lines) and VBL (visible bra lines).

Showing through her French basque themed dress, Gwyneth took her trip to Paris a little too seriously…and I'm sure the French women didn't agree! If you look through the black lace on her dress you can clearly see a white bra and a pair of white panties.

The look was supposed to be a take on a French maid outfit for her movie Two Lovers. We though the dress was actually cute but we think she may have went a little too far with the see through lace... and unfortunately, she did it on purpose!

If you don't know Carson Kressley, here's a quick bio. Carson was born and raised in Pennsylvania and was a true horse rider. He competed since an early age and was a part of the US World Cup Saddle Seat Equitation Team.

However, this fashion guru is known for his attitude and passion for all things fashion. From 1994 to 2002, Carson worked for Ralph Lauren in menswear and advertising. Then, in 2003, the Carson we know and love came to be when his show, Queer Eye, debuted on Bravo cable television network. Since then he's been featured on The Today Show, E!, Miss Universe, Miss USA and much more.

In 2007, Carson proved that he was a force to be reckoned with when in February he was announced the host of Lifetime's makeover show, How to Look Good Naked. The series premiered on January 4, 2008 and drew 1.6 million viewers. The big thing was that Carson was able to reach that coveted marketing group, 18-49 and 18-34.

How To Really Take Care of Your Bras

Taking care of your bras is something that many women have problems doing. We've seen just about every which way possible. Here are a few things that are just not okay!

Washing and drying bras in the washing machine and dryer
Using powdered detergents to wash your bras
Hanging your bras to dry

First, before you wash make sure you fasten all hooks! This is important for your bra and any other garments you may have. Bra hooks have a tendency to snag other garments and get hooked on holes in the washer and dryer.

Second, Use a lingerie bag or a bra washing bowel so that your bra will keep its shape. Bra washing bowels are awesome! They keep your bras in a little bowl throughout the wash.

Third, always wash on the delicate cycle. The delicate cycle is gentle enough not to damage.

Lastly, and this important, reshape and lay flat on a towel to dry. This also keeps the shape of the bra. Hanging a bra to dry stretches the fabric.
